Episode Transcription

Luisa: Hey everyone. Welcome to Share the Air. We'll hear stories about the identities, issues and communities that exist within and alongside the ultimate community. I'm Luisa Neves.

Tulsa: And I’m Tulsa Douglas. We'll be talking to ultimate's leaders, game changers, and trailblazers about how they got to where they are today and where they plan on going tomorrow.

[intro music starts]

Tulsa and Luisa, together: This is Share the Air.

Luisa: I honestly thought that was pretty good. That was pretty good.

[Tulsa and Luisa laughing]

Dom Fontenette: And have I become a better person? Yes. Playing with riot, like, um, I'm still a really bad listener, but I'm a better listener.

Tulsa: In this first season of Share the Air, we'll speak with Dom Fontenette and we'll talk about how she's grown as an athlete and a person, how we define success, and how ultimate has shaped who she is today.

Dom Fontenette: I saw myself as beautiful for the first time...just not even through the eyes of someone else, but just myself in a way, because I could be the color I was, I could be the person I was without needing to, or feeling inferior to someone else.

Tulsa: We'll also speak with Amel Awadelkarim about adapting and adjusting after injury and how she found new ways to contribute to her team.

Amel Awadelkarim: I felt so impactful on the sideline. Like I was like, I actually am having an effect on the field though I'm not playing.

Luisa: Amel also shares her experience playing at LA Throwback with the Color of Ultimate.

Amel Awadelkarim: I'm overwhelmed trying to explain how impactful it was... I think it's changed my course in ultimate.

Tulsa: We're excited to share Amel's conversation with you.

Luisa: In our chat with Jenna Weiner, we talk mixed ultimate, disc golf, the Western Ultimate League, and so much more.

Jenna Weiner: I mean, learning and growing is when you take in new information and then sometimes you realize that you need to change and then changing appropriately.

Luisa: Jenna also talks with us about what it's like to be a full-time advocate, how important that work is, and how tiring it can be.

Jenna Weiner: I'm trying to live life as a person in the world, That's a lot of things. Somebody we talk about has activists and advocates in the world who were doing this work and were like, wow, they're doing amazing things. Look at them as an amazing person. Well, I appreciate that and all, but like, I'm also just trying to live my life here.

[outro music starts]
